Facts about Anti-Ulcer Drugs

Misoprostol is an artificial prostaglandin meant for the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers. This is done by the dropping down the effects of the acids in the stomach and it takes the position of substances in the stomach that is meant for defense and is withdrawn by non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Mostly these NSAIDs are aspirin or ibuprofen etc the work of which is mostly to treat arthritis. If one gets treated with NSAID drugs like aspirin, ketoprofen or ibuprofen, Misoprostol is then used to evade the growth of ulcers in the abdomen during the therapy period. The drug is useful if patients have a record of high risk ulcers and also the older patients with allied weakening diseases. Misoprostol has many vivid uses apart from these.

Misoprostol is in the form of a tablet and can be taken by mouth. The drug is taken four times a day after each meal and the last one is during bedtime at night.

Misoprostol has to be taken on a regular basis to get the most of the benefits from it. Women are advised not to take the first dose during the second or third day of their period. This is done to assure that they are not pregnant. If a woman is taking this drug, she should not stop taking it without asking the doctor.

As we have discussed earlier, Misoprostol is a prostaglandin prescribed to heal gastric ulcers and prevent them. After prescribing if a person starts taking Misoprostol, the drug starts to produce more mucus and increased secretion of protective mucus increases and lines on the gastrointestinal region to increase the region's blood circulation, thus the functioning of the mucus is stimulated. Often Misoprostol is prescribed with NSAIDs to make sure that gastric ulcers are not developing; this is a very common effect of NSAIDs.

Misoprostol indications

- If you are allergic to prostaglandins, stop taking Misoprostol.

In case of the following Misoprostol must be prescribed:

- If the women has done a serum pregnancy testing at least two weeks before and has a negative result.

- If the patient can cope with the different contraception methods.

Misoprostol treatment must only begin on the second or third day of the subsequent normal menstrual period.

If a patient is taking Misoprostol and is not still being able to conceive then she should immediately discontinue the drug and inform the physician at the earliest. Misoprostol is very harsh to the unborn baby and it is in the FDA pregnancy category X. miscarriage or abortion is the end result if it is not withdrawn on time. If you wish to prevent the threat of NSAID induced gastric ulcer then the suggested adult oral dose would be 200 mcg per diet four times every day. If this dose becomes intolerable then the dose should be reduced to 100 mcg per diet.
